Training in Preventive Medicine

Three years of residency training are required for eligibility to sit for the certification examinations in Preventive Medicine. There are currently over 70 programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Training is conducted under a set of approved Program Requirements. More information about the ACGME may be found on its web site at www.acgme.org. A listing of accredited programs in the three specialty areas of Preventive Medicine may be found on the ACGME web site at Preventive Medicine Residency Programs.

Board Exam Preparation Courses

The American Board of Preventive Medicine does not offer or endorse any review courses to prepare for its certifying examinations. Courses are offered by the following specialty societies and information about their courses can be obtained from their offices or web sites.

Notice from the AMA

The American Medical Association (AMA) allows credit toward the Physician Recognition Award (PRA) for successful completion of Board certification or maintenance of certification. Information about claiming this credit may be found in the Physician's Recognition Award and credit system brochure. Twenty-five Category 1 Credits are awarded.
